Some of the most common English mistakes our generation makes are rooted in our increasing reliance on speaking rather than writing. And when it comes to punctuation and pronouns, even English majors find that logic gets in the way of their (I’m sorry, his or her) passive absorption of “the rules”. In other words, we want language to work for us, not against us— and we’re changing English to do it. It’s fascinating to see how texting and blogging have changed the way we use language— even for those of us who claim it hasn’t.
